With temperatures well below negative 20 this morning, some Grand Forks Herald reporters set out to test something commonly seen online in the winter—the water vapor trick.

The trick is that when boiling water is thrown into the cold air, it seems to turn to snow.

Boiling water is closer to evaporating than cold water, so when the boiling water meets the frigid air the water droplets cool and evaporate into a cloud before they have time to hit the ground.
